Seventh-ranked Clay-Chalkville came into Jasper Friday night and showed exactly why they are one of the best teams in Class 6A, defeating the Vikings 40-7.

The Cougars (3-0, 1-0) held Jasper (1-2, 0-1) to less than 200 yards in offense, while compiling plenty of yards of their own for three of the four quarters in the Region 6 opener for both teams.

“We came out and controlled the football and the clock in the first quarter, but we couldn’t hold up,” Jasper Coach Philip Bailey said. “That right there is a good football team. We knew this region was no joke from the start. It is not going to get any easier from here. Our guys played their tails off, and I’m proud of that. I can’t say enough about that. They work and do everything we ask them to do.”
